Way to Go, Midwest City Fire!

L to R: Senior Firefighter John Steele, Firefighter Matt Mockabee, Lieutenant Rhett Murphy,
Major Reese Morrison, Mayor Jack Fry, Fire Chief Randy Olsen, and Representative Charlie Joyner.

For the seventh year straight the Midwest City Fire Department has brought home a winning trophy from the Los Alamos National Laboratory Hazmat Challenge, Los Alamos, New Mexico. This year marks the 14th year for the event and Midwest City has been competing for the last seven years. This win makes the sixth time the team has won the overall trophy and the second time to win the technical position.

Major Reese Morrison, Lt. Rhett Murphy, Senior Firefighter John Steele, and Firefighter Matt Mockabee were the participants from the Midwest City fire department that led the team to victory. Fourteen teams competed in eight different events that are simulations of hazardous material emergencies.

The annual event was started in 1996 by the laboratory as a way to increase the skills and response of the Los Alamos hazmat team members.

In 1983, Midwest City fire department established the very first Hazardous Materials response team in the State of Oklahoma. Midwest City Fire Department is also one of eight Regional Response Teams to receive a CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive) trailer from the Oklahoma Department of Homeland Security.
